Lagna — the ascendant, and why birth time matters so much
The lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It is the anchor the whole chart is built from, and it is the single reason an exact birth time matters.
Why it moves so fast
The Earth turns once a day, so the entire zodiac passes the eastern horizon in about 24 hours. That is roughly two hours per sign. Two people born the same morning four hours apart in the same city have different lagnas and, in practice, substantially different charts.
It also depends on place, not just time — the horizon at a different latitude and longitude sees a different sign rising at the same instant.
What it builds
The lagna becomes the first house, and the houses follow from it. We use whole-sign houses, the classical Indian method: each sign is one house, counted from the lagna's sign. Every statement about which house a planet sits in — including Mangal dosha — depends entirely on this.
The lagna's ruling planet becomes the lagna lord, whose condition is read as the condition of the person's overall footing.
Lagna, Moon sign, Sun sign
Indian practice reads the lagna as the body and outward life, the Moon sign as the mind and emotional weather, and the Sun as vitality and authority. The Sun sign — the one western horoscope columns use — carries the least weight of the three.
When someone says a Vedic reading 'did not sound like them', it is usually because they were comparing it to a Sun-sign description.
If you do not know your birth time
A chart is still worth generating, and it is worth being precise about what survives. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so your Moon sign and usually your nakshatra will be right. The planets' signs will be right. Your dasha timeline will be close, off by a matter of months.
What will not be right is the lagna and every house position that follows from it — which means house-based readings, including whether Mars falls in a Mangal dosha house, cannot be trusted. When a birth time is unknown we compute for 12:00 noon and say so plainly on the chart rather than quietly presenting a guess as a fact.

What is the difference between lagna and rashi?
The lagna is the sign rising at your birth, which changes about every two hours. The rashi usually means your Moon sign, which changes about every two and a half days. The lagna anchors the houses; the Moon sign describes the mind.
How much does birth time affect a kundli?
For the lagna and all house positions, completely — a two-hour error typically changes the lagna. For the Moon sign, nakshatra and planetary signs, very little.
Can I get a kundli without a birth time?
Yes, and it is still useful. We compute for noon and mark clearly which parts are reliable and which are not, rather than presenting the whole chart as if the time were known.
What are whole-sign houses?
The classical Indian method where each house is exactly one sign, counted from the sign containing the lagna. It is what this site uses, and it is stated on every chart.
