Nakshatras — the 27 lunar mansions, and why yours matters more than your sign
The 27 nakshatras are the older layer of Indian astrology, and in practice they carry more weight than the twelve signs. Your birth star decides which dasha period you were born into, most of how a match is scored, and traditionally the syllable your name begins with.
What a nakshatra is
The zodiac is divided into 27 equal parts of 13°20' each. Each is a nakshatra, and each is ruled by one of the nine grahas in a fixed repeating order. The Moon crosses roughly one nakshatra a day, which is where the division comes from — these are the Moon's daily resting places.
Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. That single position does more work in classical practice than any other point in the chart apart from the ascendant.
Padas
Each nakshatra divides again into four padas of 3°20'. Twenty-seven nakshatras times four padas gives 108 — the number that recurs throughout the tradition for exactly this reason.
The pada matters because it locates you within a nakshatra rather than merely inside it, and it feeds the navamsa, the divisional chart most used for marriage.
What your birth star decides
Four things, concretely:
- Your Vimshottari dasha — the ruling planet of your birth star is the period you are born into, and the whole 120-year sequence follows from it.
- Most of guna milan — yoni, gana, nadi and tara all read from the nakshatra rather than from the sign.
- Your traditional naming syllable, which is chosen from the pada.
- A layer of character reading finer than the sign, since 27 divisions describe more than twelve.
Nakshatra and rashi are not the same thing
A rashi is 30° and a nakshatra is 13°20', so they do not line up. A nakshatra can straddle two signs, and a sign contains a little over two nakshatras. Both are read from the same Moon position; they are different resolutions of the same measurement, not competing answers.
