Bhakoot dosha — the distance between two moon signs
Bhakoot is worth seven of the 36 points and it depends on one thing only: how far apart the two Moon signs are. It is entirely mechanical, which makes it the easiest koota to check and the easiest to misread.
The rule
Count the whole-sign distance from each Moon sign to the other. Three pairings are read as difficult and score zero; every other distance scores the full seven.
- 2/12 — the signs are adjacent. Traditionally associated with financial strain.
- 5/9 — traditionally associated with children and with fortune.
- 6/8 — traditionally read as the hardest of the three, associated with health and with sudden change.
Why it is worth checking rather than accepting
Bhakoot is calculated from Moon signs alone, so it ignores everything else in either chart. Two people whose Moons happen to sit in adjacent signs lose seven points regardless of how the rest of their charts relate — which is exactly why classical practice attaches several cancellations to it.
The cancellations
These are the conditions we check, all of which are commonly applied:
- Both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet.
- The two Moon-sign lords are mutual friends.
- Both birth stars share the same ruling planet.
Why the lords matter more than the distance
The logic behind the cancellations is worth following, because it explains why they are not loopholes. Bhakoot measures a distance between two signs, but a sign is not a bare position — it is governed by a planet, and the relationship between those two planets is a more specific statement about the two charts than the gap between the signs they rule.
So when both Moon signs answer to the same planet, or to two planets that are naturally friendly, classical practice treats the more specific fact as the one that decides. The distance stops being the last word.

Bhakoot and nadi are the two heavy kootas, seven and eight points, fifteen of the 36 between them. If a match falls below the conventional eighteen, one of those two is almost always the reason — and both have well-established exceptions.
That is the practical reason to read a match as eight numbers rather than one. A total of sixteen with bhakoot cancelled is a different situation from a total of sixteen spread thinly across the lighter kootas, and only the breakdown can tell you which you are looking at.
