Nadi dosha — the heaviest koota, and the exceptions to it
Nadi carries eight points, more than any other koota, so nadi dosha alone can drop a match below the conventional threshold while everything else agrees. It is the most heavily weighted objection in guna milan and also one of the most frequently set aside.
The three nadis
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis — Adi, Madhya or Antya — and the 27 nakshatras divide evenly, nine to each. The grouping is traditionally read as constitutional, in the same family of ideas as the three doshas of Ayurveda.
If both people's birth nakshatras fall in the same nadi, the koota scores zero. If they differ, it scores the full eight. There is no partial credit, which is why it moves a total so sharply.
What it is held to mean
Classically the concern is constitutional similarity — two people of the same underlying type, traditionally linked to health and to children. Whether one accepts that reading or not, it is worth knowing what the rule was actually about, because it is usually quoted without any content at all.
The exceptions
Classical practice sets nadi dosha aside under several conditions. Two of them are unambiguous and checkable from the charts themselves, and these are the ones we apply:
- Both people share the same nakshatra but have different Moon signs.
- Both people share the same Moon sign but have different nakshatras.
Why the same two people can be told different things
Nadi is read from the birth nakshatra, and the nakshatra depends on the Moon's exact sidereal position. The Moon crosses a nakshatra boundary roughly once a day, so anyone born close to one can be placed on either side of it by two sites using different ayanamsas — and a nakshatra that moves takes the nadi with it.
This is worth knowing before treating a nadi verdict as settled. If a birth falls near a boundary, the honest answer is that the nadi is uncertain, not that it is bad.
How to hold it
Nadi dosha is real within the system that defines it, and it is also the single most common reason a family is told a match has failed. Both things can be true. If it applies to a match you care about, the useful next step is to find out whether one of the exceptions applies — not to look for something to buy.
It is also worth remembering what the koota is and is not. Nadi compares one attribute of two birth stars. It is eight points in a screening system, weighted heavily by tradition for reasons about constitution and children that people are free to weigh for themselves. It was never a prohibition, and the volume of classical exceptions attached to it suggests the tradition did not treat it as one either.
